PRETTIEST EYES AWARD - MARTIN BIRON
I know it is silly to mention about Martin Biron #43 - Lac St. Charles, Quebec - the goalie of the Philadelphia Flyers as the player/goalie with the prettiest eyes in the NHL. I thought this post might cheer the Flyers a little considering they are already down 3 games in the Series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. My husband asked how I could tell how beautiful Biron's eyes are with the mask on. I told him just like men attend football games to watch cheerleaders shaking their bodies, I go to hockey games to see "goalies' eyes" :)

MANNY LEGACE
After the St. Louis Blues placed Manny Legace on waivers and no other teams rushed to claim the All-Star goalie, as of Saturday, February 7th, Legace was assigned to AHL Peoria, a Blues farm. That is the hockey business, be health and perform or to the minor or waivers/traded you go.The Blues pulled Legace when he allowed three soft goals on the first eight shots against the Red Wings. Before that Legace did not do too well with knee problems and an operation in the offseason.
It did not help that the Blues defense has not been strong and it is easy to blame the goalie when the D-men did not keep the puck above the blue line.
Keep your spirit up, Manny. This is only a minor set back. You've been there before. Be strong, stay healthy and work hard to get back to NHL soon.

MASKED MEN ON ICE
Goalies are different - a puzzling group of unique athletes who form an almost secret society. A goalie knows he is the last line of defense, often the final person standing between victory and defeat, often blamed when the puck got inside the net but not given enough credits when the team won.
Chris Osgood is one of the brave masked men who guard the net for the Detroit Red Wings, stopping slapshots travelling 100 mph. Need proof that Osgood is So-Good? How about two Stanley Cup Championships?
Goalies such as Terry Sawchuk, Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour are known for being a little wacky. Goaltenders have always been special hockey players. And they are accentric, superstitious and do peculiar things. After all, only a brave man would stand between the posts, get ready to greet those bone-cracking slapshots and try to stop the icy puck with his body.
The last goalie to play without a mask was Andy Brown in 1974.
